Bonsai Planter & Planting Workshop with Krystal Wilford and Roland Lopez

2-Part: May 24 (6-8:30pm) & June 14 (6-9pm)

Bonsai. Bonsai is the Japanese art of growing and shaping miniature trees in containers, developed from the traditional Chinese art form of penjing. Come make your own bonsai planter and learn how to plant and care for your bonsai.

Workshop Part 1 - Friday 5/24 6-8:30pm

Participants will make their own bonsai planter using clay slabs and a hump mold. The clay can be left smooth or textured using a variety of materials that will be offered. Individuals will select from a choice of 3 glazes and participant's pots will be glazed and fired by studio staff prior to part 2 of the workshop. Krystal Wilford, an artist within our Austin Pottery community who has vast experience making bonsai planters, will guide this portion of the workshop.

Workshop Part 2 - Friday 6/14 6-9pm

Participants will plant a portulacaria afra (Jade) into their bonsai planters. They will prune, wire, design, and plant their bonsai with guidance from Roland Lopez, a local bonsai practitioner. Roland has been a practicing member of the Austin bonsai society for over 6 years. He has also trained with and received a certificate of completion from Eisen-en bonsai master, Bjorn Bjornholm. Soil. Supplies and tools will be provided.
